Breastfeeding Amounts by Age

The quantity of breast milk or formula a baby needs can vary based on their age and individual needs. Here is a general guideline for feeding babies aged 1 to 12 months.

  • Newborn to 1 Month

    • Feeding Frequency: Every 2 to 4 hours (8 to 12 times in 24 hours)
    • Quantity per Feeding: 30-60 ml
    • Note: Feedings may vary, but newborns will gradually increase intake as they grow.
  • 1 to 6 Months

    • Feeding Frequency: Every 3 to 4 hours
    • Quantity per Feeding: 60-180ml
    • Note: As your baby grows, the amount per feeding increases, while the frequency may slightly decrease.
  • 6 to 12 Months

    • Feeding Frequency: 3 to 5 times a day
    • Quantity per Feeding: 180-240 ml
    • Note: Solid foods are introduced around 6 months, but breast milk remains a crucial nutrition source. Adjust based on your baby's hunger cues and preferences.
  • 12 Months and Older

    • Feeding Frequency: Varies; often a few times a day, typically before naps or bedtime
    • Quantity per Feeding: Varies greatly depending on diet and preference
    • Note: As your toddler eats more solid foods, breastfeeding frequency generally decreases.
